Richard’s story

Richard is the father of two young daughters. When he and his spouse filed for divorce, the burden of supporting two households fell on his shoulders and his debt load began to grow. Richard thought that things couldn't get any worse after he lost his job. That is, until his debts increased, along with the calls from creditors.

Richard felt as if his whole world was collapsing, and he was ashamed when the creditors would call when his girls were staying with him. He knew that he had to do something to take control back and stop the harassing phone calls. A friend recommended that he call Bob, a Grant Thornton Licensed Insolvency Trustee. Bob was able to meet him the next day and after learning of his unemployment and his financial situation, they agreed that Richard's best option was to file for Bankruptcy and make a fresh start. "As soon as I filed for bankruptcy protection, the phone calls from creditors stopped and I could breathe again. I was able to concentrate on the task of becoming gainfully employed once again."

Today Richard says things are good and he is teaching his daughters the value of saving and making good money decisions, even at their young age.

Richard's advice:

Once you make the decision to gain control of your life and your finances, things get better immediately. The Trustee that I saw really knew what he was doing and was able to guide me through the decision making process. The relief that I felt was something that you can't put a price tag on.
